Full renovation of Central Catholic’s Brothers Residence, adding modern upgrades and accessibility while preserving the building’s original character.
St. John Vianney Manor
A. Martini & Co. served as the General Contractor for St. John Vianney Manor retirement home on the campus of St. Paul Seminary in Crafton. This is the first renovation/expansion to the facility, since the third floor was added over 37 years ago. Construction included four residential suites, for a total of 35 in the home. A new, two story structure, connecting the existing building, which now houses the dining room, kitchen, two lounges, an exercise facility and nurse’s office. Suites were refurbished with walk-in showers, new windows, flooring and paint. The temperature of every suite can be controlled individually, thanks to an updated HVAC system. Additionally a new elevator was added to the facility.
After 11 months of construction, the $5M project was rededicated and blessed on December 11, 2017 by Bishop David Zubik.
St. Thomas A’Becket Parish
A. Martini & Co was selected to work with the Pittsburgh Diocese, the St Thomas A’ Becket parish and Astorino Architects to design and build a new sanctuary and significant building expansion – totaling 25,000 sf, a 2 story addition. This project also included a new elevator shaft and elevator.
Three years prior to actual construction start, A. Martini & Co. provided preconstruction services, working closely with the owner and the architect. Site issues and building material costs were evaluated throughout these activities. Due to poor soil conditions special foundations were required. A pre-engineered metal building frame with a masonry façade was determined the most economical approach with a metal roof.
A. Martini & Co. carefully staged the project with the utmost attention to safety due to daily mass and day care services maintaining a fully operational schedule. Our team made sure there was no interruption to the daily activities of the parish.
Central Catholic High School
Over the past few decades, A. Martini & Co. has partnered with Central Catholic High School on both large and small projects on their campus. We have provided various renovations to existing areas, including significant overhauls of their cafeteria and the Clifford E. Brown Library. The following is a list of the projects completed over the course of general contracting partnership with Central Catholic:
- Renovated Library
- Renovated Cafeteria
- Computer Labs
- 3rd Floor/Windows
- 4th Floor Classrooms of the Future
- 2nd Floor Teacher/Administration Space – Renovations
Each of these projects was completed in and around the school’s schedule, whether it was over summer break, or during the course of the school year. Safety was the main priority, for the well being of the students, staff and visitors that visited the Central Catholic campus each day. It is also important to note that each project completed in this facility needs to align with specific requirements for an historical structure, as the Central Catholic High School is designated a Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark.
St. Bede’s Parish
A. Martini & Co. completed an 8,000sf, complex project in a dense residential neighborhood that entailed precise construction of a new gymnasium and multi-purpose area, as well as renovations to different areas throughout the school. The gymnasium scope included locker rooms and a social areas with a kitchen/cafe. The school renovations entailed a new cafeteria, kitchen, and multiple classroom renovations. Both preconstruction and construction services were provided for this project, collaborating with the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
St. Benedict the Abbot
A. Martini & Co. constructed this $4.6 million project for St. Benedict the Abbot Parish. The 24,500 square foot, 1,100 seat facility is now the second largest church in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. The church features 20 foot high ceilings, terrazzo tile floors, and stained glass windows.
Our Lady of Grace
The design of this 13,000sf, 700 seat parish was a challenge to build. The angles of the walls and roof constantly needed to be verified from the axis, which was the altar at the front of the church. This verification between the different subcontractors required extensive coordination and oversight by A. Martini & Co. Throughout this project, innovative construction techniques were used to construct this “moving” building. For example, the two stained glass windows at each end of the church were built into a curved wall. Because of the complicated design of the roof, it was fabricated on site to reduce the number of seams.
Holy Trinity Parish
In 13 months, A. Martini & Co. built this 650-seat church with an atrium to connect the church to the existing school. The ceiling, with a center reaching 50′, has exposed timber trusses. The project also featured built-in wooden benches in the Nave, a hardwood platform for the altar and stained glass windows – including an 11′ rose window. Throughout the project, our team coordinated activities to reduce traffic and safety issues in and around the school. They also performed site-work and doubled the size of the parking lot.
